Fans can expect three new 7-inch-scale figures in the next Ultimates wave - Raphael (Road Gear), April O'Neil, and Hun. All three figures are designed to be compatible with a Shell Cycle vehicle and will come with interchangeable helmeted heads.

The TMNT Ultimates figures are priced at $65 each, while the Shell Cycle is $150.

On the Reaction+ front, this marks the first time Super7 will include the TMNT franchise in that long-running line of retro-style figures. Like all Reaction+ figures, these toys are similar in size and style to classic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero figures and feature similar O-ring construction. The figures are inspired by the 1987 animated series, with this first wave including Raphael, Donatello, Shredder, and a Foot Ninja.

The TMNT Reaction+ figures are priced at $25 each.

Stay tuned to IGN in the coming days for more Toy Fair 2026 coverage. This book dramatizes the life and work of Dr. Opal Lee and reveals how the national holiday Juneteenth got its start.

IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of First Freedom. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:

First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth is written by Angélique Roché, with art by Alvin Epps (I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005: A Graphic Novel), Bex Glendining (On Starlit Shores), and Millicent Monroe, colors by Damali Beatty, and letters by Alexis Bennett with Andworld Design.

“I believe it is important to note that while this book gives ample space to the conversation of Juneteenth, Ms. Opal’s impact has been and continues to reach further than just the fight for a national holiday," Roché writes in the book's preface. "Even before Ms. Opal chaired a Juneteenth committee or set her sights on walking to D.C., she had time and time again made herself a ‘committee of one.’ As a daughter, sister, mother, friend, educator, advocate, and activist, she has set out to accomplish tasks big and small. Guided by family legacy and faith, she continues to challenge the limitations others would place on us from the ordinary to the extraordinary. That is the story I set out to tell, with the sincere hope that in these words, pictures, timelines, and references, I’ve been able to capture even a modicum of her spirit and an iota of the vastness of personal power her life and legacy represent.”

“First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth is a testament to the truly inspirational courage of Dr. Opal Lee,” said Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn. “The book is an essential read not only for librarians, teachers, historians, and activists, but anyone interested in American history, the power of activism, and the expression of personal freedom.”

First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth is available in hardcover and softcover formats now. It's not a series I'd recommend for everyone, but it's fast, fun, and filled with a surprising amount of explosions. The story follows a guy named Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat as Earth gets taken over by an alien game show and straddled by a completely unhinged AI. There are currently seven books in there series so far and the next book is releasing in May.

If sci-fi is more your thing, then I highly recommend checking out Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. The movie adaptation is coming out in March, so right now is the best time to read it before the movie ruins it for you. Assuming the trailers for the movie haven't already spoiled you on the plot, I'd suggest going in cold and just enjoying the story. It's incredibly well written and you don't need to be a sci-fi nerd to enjoy it. Plus if you like it enough, you can also grab the new LEGO set collaboration coming out next month.

My last big recommendation on this list comes from my deep love for Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe. In case you missed the news, Apple TV and Sanderson recently struck a deal to adapt his sprawling fantasy universe for streaming. If you've never read any of the Cosmere books before, you're going to want to check out the Mistborn trilogy or the Stormlight Archive first. Amazon has box sets for both included in this sale, so it's a perfect starter pack for anyone new to that universe.

The Best Books to Give as Gifts

For those looking for gift ideas, there are a lot of different options available. My overall favorite reading gifts to recommend, however, are illustrated editions. More specifically, I'd suggest checking out The Lord of the Rings Illustrated edition and the Harry Potter Illustrated editions. The Lord of the Rings book I've featured here includes drawings and maps from Tolkien himself and is a really fun way to read the LotR books. Whereas the Harry Potter illustrated books feature gorgeous art from Jim Kay that really capture the magic of the series.

There are also some really cool gift editions of classic stories that I'd suggest checking out. The complete Sherlock Holmes collection looks awesome and features all of the novels from Arthur Conan Doyle in one volume. The Winnie-the-Pooh gift edition is also one of my top Disney gift picks and I'd definitely recommend that. My copy is currently sitting on a shelf in my son's nursery and we've already gotten some good use out of it.

If you're willing to spend a bit more, Amazon also includes quite a few box sets in this sale that are worth a look. Fans of the Game of Thrones books will love the leather-bound box set of George R.R. Martin's series. There's also the entire hardcover set of Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass Series included here that I'd recommend for any fan of the romantasy genre. And the Calvin and Hobbes collection is just a great gift for anyone regardless of their preferences.

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn and Stormlight Archive Box Sets Are Buy 1, Get 1 Half Off Today

Brandon Sanderson recently revealed he's struck a deal with Apple TV to adapt his massive Cosmere universe for streaming. This has been huge news for those already in love with his books, but for those who aren't already familiar with Sanderson's literary works it may be the final push to finally they need to dive in and start reading. I'd personally suggest starting with the Mistborn trilogy, which are some of my favorite fantasy reads of all time. This trilogy represents Mistborn Era 1, which is essentially the first set of books on the timeline for the world of Scadriel. There's also a Mistborn Era 2, which takes place in the future, but as far as we know it's the first trilogy that Sanderson will be adapting into feature films.

The Mistborn box set includes:

Mistborn

The Well of Ascension

The Hero of Ages

The other box set featured here is for The Stormlight Archive. The set only includes the first three books in the series, but it's an excellent starting point into Sanderson's biggest series in all of the Cosmere. Each of these books are quite long, but they are deeply immersive and absolutely worth diving into. Priest has an assassin and superhero background, and the miniseries will draw from her history as a whole rather than from a standalone event – something that will help give a deeper view of her character, according to Todd McFarlane Productions.

In a press release sent to IGN, Todd McFarlane promised fans they won't be disappointed and addressed Simone's creative abilities with storytelling.

“Writer Gail Simone has been on my (and thousands of other folk’s) radar for quite some time. I’ve admired her taking many different heroes and characters into worlds that feel like I’ve met that personality before. So, to now have the chance to get her to bring that talent to the Spawn Universe was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up. Her enthusiasm for her story of the Jessica Priest character along with her advocating for the artistic skills of the wonderful Ig Guara made this a creative team I am anxiously awaiting to see myself as a comic book fan."

Simone shared how she got the opportunity for penning the series saying, “It’s a thrill to be chosen specifically by one of the iconic founders of Image to create in his playground. Apparently, he’d read a DC book I’d done and was impressed by the dialogue, which was incredibly gratifying. The next thing I know, I was having hour-long conversations with Todd McFarlane – not just about She-Spawn, but about his passion for storytelling and character. Each one felt like a masterclass. He asked a lot about my process, with genuine and heartfelt curiosity, and it was one of the nicest and most collaborative introductions I’ve ever had with a publisher. I’m proud to get to write part of the Spawn Universe, and grateful to Todd and his team for making this connection happen. I also want to give credit to Erica Schultz, writer of the Incredible Rat City Spawn series for helping me pave the path for She-Spawn."

Going into specifics about She-Spawn as a character, Simone added, “I love her. I see her as one of the few supernatural badasses who drives a pick-up truck and has a family cabin in the woods. She goes up against a religious sect to save a child, making her a bad person fighting for something good, with stakes she couldn’t possibly imagine. Ig Guara did meticulous, gorgeous work, with typically beautiful classic Image coloring by Robert Nugent. It just looks stunning. It’s a story with no-seat belt and the engines on high – violent, a little kind, a little mean, about an exploration of the country and a character’s soul.”

She-Spawn issue #1 will be available to purchase in comic shops and digitally on May 6, with variant covers by Francesco Mattina and Brett Booth. Bob Reynolds may be the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe, but he's also got a dark side that cancels out every good deed The Sentry does. To make matters worse, Bob has spent more time dead than alive over the past 15 years. But things are finally looking up for the Golden Guardian of Good in 2026. Not only is he returning to the big screen in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, The Sentry is also starring in a brand new series written by none other than co-creator Paul Jenkins.

IGN had the chance to speak with Jenkins via email to learn more about the new book and his thoughts on The Sentry's MCU debut. First, check out an exclusive preview of the first issue in the slideshow gallery below, then read on to learn more:

The new volume of The Sentry is significant not just because it revives the popular hero after his death in 2020's King in Black, but because it's Jenkins' first Marvel project in well over a decade. In fact, one of his last Marvel assignments was exploring the fallout of The Sentry's first death in 2010's Sentry: Fallen Sun. We asked the writer what made now the right time to finally return to the Marvel fold.

"Well, there’s certainly never a bad time to return," Jenkins tells IGN. "But in all seriousness, I had consulted on the Thunderbolts* movie, and that led directly to me reconnecting with C.B. [Cebulski] and some of the folks at Marvel. Sentry was gaining an entirely new set of fans, and it seemed like a good time to explore a new series. It feels wonderful to be back working with a publisher who has meant so much to my career. I love to write comics, and I really missed working with so many of my friends in this business. While I’m here, I should definitely give a shout-out to our editors, Mark Paniccia and Lauren Amaro - people don’t realize just how difficult this job really is. I was an editor for maybe five or so years before I became a freelance writer. So, huge thanks to those guys for being amazing. It’s great to be back."

As for Thunderbolts*, we were curious how Jenkins felt about seeing one of his most famous creations come to life on the big screen. Jenkins reveals that the film captured the most important element of the character - his vulnerability.

"I was lucky enough to interact with the director and actor, and I was so thrilled by the way Jake Schreier and Lewis Pullman handled the character," Jenkins says. "Jake truly understood the point of Sentry - it has never been about how powerful he is, it has always been about how vulnerable he is. Jake was very gracious to chat with me at the premiere’s after party, and I had a chance to talk with Lewis as well. He’s so perfect for this role because he brings the right amount of vulnerability to Bob. In both cases, Lewis and Jake knew this was all about Bob, and the Sentry and Void are sort of side-effects."
<section data-transform="image-with-caption" data-image-url="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2026/02/06/sentry2026001011-col-gm-1770397486434.jpg" data-image-title="Art by Christian Rosado. But with this latest series from Jenkins and artist Christian Rosado, Marvel is shifting back to a more familiar status quo for The Sentry.

"We’re not tying into that story," Jenkins reveals. "When we began the project, C.B. suggested that I go back to the approach that I had used previously. Not to cast that story aside, but more to play to my strengths with Sentry. I think that’s the right approach - it allows us to tell a more focused, evergreen story (as opposed to trying to tie up pieces of existing continuity). If we are successful and people want Sentry books, then hopefully we can look at that stuff in future."

Instead, the new series digs directly into the core dilemma of the character. How can Bob Reynolds be a hero when he knows that every act of good he carries out as The Sentry is matched by a corresponding act of evil from The Void? Jenkins teases a very emotionally charged story here, to the point that many readers may be in tears before the end.

"Void and Sentry are an essential part of Bob Reynolds," Jenkins says. "This time, we are exploring the internal conflict that Bob faces, how he cannot become the Sentry and save 100 people from a plane crash without the Void equaling things out and killing 100 people in return. The central question for Bob is going to be, 'How can I get past that? What good am I if I can’t help people?'"

Jenkins continues, "However, the main teaser I am going to give is this: readers are going to be mad with me because I’m almost certain we are going to make a lot of people cry. This story is very, very emotional - it hits right in the heart, and it hurts. I’ve now seen the art for issue #3 and I can tell you, people are going to be very moved by what happens in this story. It’s about how and why Bob wants to save everybody - there is a core reason that goes back to his childhood. For me, it is personal. When I was a little boy, I was affected greatly by this one thing in my life, and we’re bringing that story to life. I’m not kidding; I expect to meet a lot of fans at conventions who will be very emotional about this story. And if that happens to be the case, then we have done our job."

"Readers are going to be mad with me because I’m almost certain we are going to make a lot of people cry."

Part of the fun with The Sentry is that, despite debuting in 2000, he's a character who's been retconned into the fabric of the Marvel Universe. He's been there from the beginning; the world just doesn't remember.

The original series and subsequent stories have explored how Bob has developed relationships with many key Marvel characters. He's BFFs with Reed Richards and Hulk. He helped Peter Parker win a photography Pulitzer. Jenkins confirms that the new series will continue to flesh out those relationships, particularly Bob's connections to Hulk and the Fantastic Four.

"For me, it has always been the Hulk and the Fantastic Four," Jenkins says. "Our scenes with the Hulk are some of the most emotional ones. I will admit that when I got the art, I was a little choked up by it. And Bob’s dynamic with Reed as his best friend means a lot to me. Reed knows that Bob struggles, and he’s there, trying to help Bob. For what it's worth, I think the payoff with Hulk in issue #4 is going to be absolutely worth it."

"Christian has been just brilliant - a true collaborator," Jenkins adds about the art. "Christian gets it. He understand the way the smaller, quieter moments frame the bigger action scenes. And he is absolutely nailing it. I could not be more pleased."

The Sentry #1 will be released on March 18. That was one of the big reveals in Mike Mignola's Hellboy in Hell series, which introduced Hellboy's brothers, Gamon and Lusk. Now Mignola is teaming with his own brother, Todd, to craft a new story that sheds more light on Hellboy's dysfunctional family dynamic.

IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of The Crown: A Tale of Hell, which is set in the 16th Century and focuses on Hellboy's brothers and their long-lost mother. The first issue features covers by Mike Mignola and Caldwell-Johnson. Here's Dark Horse's official description of the series:

The Crown: A Tale of Hell stars Hellboy’s brothers Gamon and Lusk, who first appeared in Mignola’s beloved 2012 series Hellboy in Hell, as they fight for control of Pandemonium in this demonic family reunion. But it isn’t just the siblings who get involved in the power struggle, as their mother returns from her prison for the first time in a hundred years with plans of her own.

“Todd came to me with the idea of writing something about Hellboy’s brothers,” said Mike Mignola in a statement. “It never would have occurred to me to do more with those guys but it didn’t take much prodding. Brothers writing about brothers in a somewhat complicated family dynamic—once we got going it was almost too easy. And fun. And SO MUCH fun that I could only imagine it drawn by Warwick.”

“The Crown follows a day in the 16th century life of Hellboy’s ‘Hell family.’” said Todd Mignola. “In the bowels of Castle Azzael, a crown is secretly being forged for a new king. Palace intrigue and deceitful backstabbing ensue as Hellboy’s dad, uncle and half-brothers all vie for the prize; for the chance to seize sleeping Satan’s throne.”

The Crown: A Tale of Hell #1 will be released on February 11. More specifically, Sanderson has revealed a progress bar on his website for the project that indicates he is already 2% done with the script.

Sanderson took to his Youtube channel to discuss some of the details of his new Apple TV partnership, saying he's been looking for a partner to adapt his books for quite a while and started doing this latest round of pitches in Hollywood back in May 2025.

"I've been looking for a partner, not somebody just to sell things off to," he explained about his decision to strike a deal with Apple TV. "This one feels different."

He went a bit further into his reasons for choosing Apple over everyone else; "I really liked the vibe, but I like the vibe with a lot of these meetings. There weren't any bad meetings in the group. Part of it was the amount of control that Apple was willing to offer me. But it's less about control and more about the partnership."

Sanderson confirmed that they are still planning Mistborn as a feature film and Stormlight Archive as a series, but that nothing is necessarily set in stone. Although this is currently the trajectory, he said "that could change as we work and develop these things."

He also confirmed his involvement in the Stormlight Archive series, commenting: "I will be the co-showrunner with someone. So, we're going to be hunting down that person." Sanderson will reportedly have approvals on every project in this partnership, which will require him to be "deeply involved" in the development of each one.

Sanderson also addressed the elephant in the room regarding his upcoming books, confirming that these projects will indeed impact his writing schedule, but "not to the point that I think you need to worry."

With George R.R. Martin's final Game of Thrones book seemingly on indefinite hold after years of the author working on TV shows, this is a sigh of relief for fans worried the same thing will happen to Mistborn or The Stormlight Archive. You can currently see the progress of all of Sanderson's writing projects on his website alongside the Mistborn script. The next book, which kicks off the third Mistborn Era, is still currently slated for a 2028 release.

With the deal still fresh, it's likely going to be a long time before we see any of these Apple TV projects come to fruition. As for what the story actually entails, here's the official synopsis from the Penguin Random House website:

"Jaylen Barsha, heir to his family’s immense power and wealth, had his life charted out for him neatly and meticulously by his parents, even though he suspected his neglected half-brother Sliro would be a better fit for the bright corporate future his parents envisioned. Then the Empire stripped it all away on trumped-up charges of conspiracy against his family. Before he can reach Sliro for help redeeming the Barsha name, a battle droid arrives at the family compound with a mission to kill every last member of the Barsha clan. Jaylen manages to fend off the attack as the sole survivor, but realizes the droid, who he reprograms, is his only chance to stay alive. But he can no longer be Jaylen Barsha—he’ll have to live now as Jaylen Vrax.

Former Separatist battle droid ND-5 knows he should be scrap metal, all things considered. He was a proficient contributor to the Separatist cause, but what is a soldier without a war? A trigger without aim? Loyalty is in his programming, and Jaylen, who treats him as more than just a weapon, has earned it. Perhaps, the droid thinks, with a partner he can be more. ND-5 just has to earn Jaylen’s trust.

With the threat against the Barsha clan still shrouded in mystery, the pair has no choice but to leverage the chaos and disappear. They find sanctuary in the anonymity of the underworld, building their reputation among scoundrels, bounty hunters, and crime syndicates. But when their latest score gives the first real clue in years to who sent ND-5 after Jaylen’s family, their biggest opportunity presents a new kind of risk. Do they give up this chance at the wealth and power Jaylen was denied to pursue answers? Or will ambition and the weight of the past shatter their unlikely partnership?"

Looking for more Star Wars reads? But, as always, we can usually count on the actors to let slip some intriguing new details. Ian McKellen is the latest to commit a Tom Holland-style faux pas. McKellen recently teased a major set piece in the new film when he spoke to the YouTube channel Jake’s Takes.

"Two police cars in front of me were raised up by cranes," McKellen reminisced about a sequence in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. "These were not special effects. Nowadays, I think things will become a little bit easier — though I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oooh, I perhaps shouldn't have said that..."

This tells us that McKellen’s Magneto will be a very dangerous adversary in Doomsday, on a level we never saw in the older X-Men movies. But why would Magneto destroy New Jersey? And does this mean Marvel Studios is adapting perhaps the most infamous Magneto storyline of all time? Let’s break it down.

Beware of potential spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday ahead!

Will Avengers: Doomsday Adapt Ultimatum?

McKellen’s comments immediately bring to mind 2009’s Ultimatum, a series that pits the Ultimate Universe versions of the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four against a very angry Magneto. As the story opens, Magneto has gone off the deep end after being confronted with the deaths of his children, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. In retaliation, he attempts to destroy human civilization by reversing Earth’s magnetic poles and causing a series of global disasters.

One of those disasters includes a massive tidal wave that hits Manhattan and drowns thousands. Even a great many superheroes like Daredevil, Beast, and Nightcrawler are killed in the deluge. It’s not New Jersey – though it is just on the other side of the Hudson River – but this story remains the most notable example of one where Magneto destroys a major American metropolis.

How does Magneto accomplish an act as terrible as this? It’s all thanks to Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Magneto captures the hammer in the prelude story, 2008’s The Ultimates 3. Using his magnetic powers, Magneto is effectively able to cancel out Mjolnir’s enchantment and manipulate the hammer to his will.

Drowning Manhattan is just the opening salvo in Magneto’s war of destruction. By the end of Ultimatum, numerous heroes are dead, including Wolverine and the majority of the X-Men. Even Cyclops is assassinated, but not before he vaporizes Magneto’s head. Ultimatum even ends with Doctor Doom himself getting his head crushed by The Thing, proving that no one was wearing plot armor in the Ultimate Universe anymore.

Ultimatum is not a well-regarded comic, to put it mildly. It’s not just the shoddy characterization and the number of major deaths featured in this story, but the bizarre, faux-edgy tone in which those deaths are presented. One particularly reviled scene shows Magneto’s henchman, the Blob, devouring the corpse of the Wasp like a ravenous zombie. Though Marvel’s Ultimate line continued for several years after, some would argue Ultimatum marked the beginning of the end for this universe.

In short, Ultimatum is not the first X-Men/Avengers crossover story we’d think of for Marvel to adapt in Doomsday. But is there a kernel of a good idea here? Certainly, the basic concept of Magneto singlehandedly annihilating a major city has some merit to it. Could it be reworked to fit the MCU? Let’s take a closer look at how Doomsday could loosely adapt Ultimatum for its own benefit.

Magneto’s Role in Doomsday

For a while now, we’ve been speculating that Avengers: Doomsday is basically an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. The casting announcements made in 2025 and the recent X-Men-themed Doomsday teaser both seem to bear out that theory. We know that the majority of the original Fox X-Men cast are turning to reprise their roles (though, oddly, Hugh Jackman’s name isn’t among them). Doomsday is a multiverse story, and it’s going to bring together the MCU’s Earth-616 and the X-Men universe’s Earth-10005 (and The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Earth-828).

It appears that Doomsday is going to borrow a fair amount from Avengers: Time Runs Out and the first issue of 2015’s Secret Wars. Time Runs Out deals with the mounting crisis that arises as more and more universes are destroyed by the phenomenon known as Incursions. By the time Secret Wars opens, only the core Marvel Universe (Earth-616) and the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) are left. The heroes of both worlds are drawn into a desperate final battle that ultimately proves pointless.

Doomsday will likely follow a similar premise, except that the final two universes in the Marvel movie multiverse will be the MCU and Fox’s X-Men universe. The Avengers are fighting the X-Men. And based on McKellen’s comments, we suspect that Magneto is really going to bring his A-game for this fight.

This is where Doomsday may borrow a page from Ultimatum. What if, during the course of the fight, Magneto intercepts Mjolnir and turns its magic against the Avengers? Just like in the comic, he could use its power to reverse Earth’s polarity and cause a devastating tidal wave. He wouldn’t be attacking his own Earth, but rather the planet threatening the survival of the entire mutant race.

McKellen and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto is a character of constantly evolving morals and loyalties. But if there’s one consistent truth about the character, it’s that he’d do anything to ensure the salvation of mutantkind. And based on the X-Men-centric Doomsday teaser, we know the Sentinels are in play for some reason. Perhaps Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is using them to stoke conflict between the Avengers and X-Men? In any case, drowning one world’s New Jersey under a tsunami seems like the kind of thing Magneto would do when push comes to shove.

The question is whether the fallout of that act will be similar to the comic. Will we see Magneto actually kill iconic MCU heroes when he destroys New Jersey? It’s possible. When Doomsday is dealing with the literal fate of existence, we can’t assume any character is truly safe. That’s especially true since the premise of Avengers: Secret Wars makes it easy enough for Doom to resurrect any characters he chooses as part of his new Battleworld.

The world will eventually be restored to some semblance of normality at the end of Secret Wars, but that doesn’t mean things won’t get pretty hairy along the way. Just don’t expect Doomsday to adapt that grotesque Blob/Wasp scene. Some things are better left to the comics.

For more on Avengers: Doomsday, find out why the Steve Rogers teaser has us so disappointed, and learn why the Thor teaser is a great reminder that Thor can and should be serious.

Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. At long last, Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe will be officially coming to both big and small screens courtesy of Apple TV. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal will adapt his most popular Mistborn (Era 1) and Stormlight Archive book series into film and television series, respectively, with Sanderson himself set to “write, produce, and consult” on the projects.

As a big fan of Brandon Sanderson and his works, (check out my reviews of both the Cosmere TTRPG and Mistborn deck building card game), I thought I would put together a short little helper guide for any of you out there that want to get a jump on the stories and characters that will soon be jumping out of your screens.

If once you finish these books and find yourself chomping at the bit for more, check out our full reading guide on The Cosmere to figure out where to go next!

Mistborn - Era 1

Mistborn and its metal-burning allomancers will be the first of the Cosmere works to coin-push their way from the pages and onto the screen in the form of films. Along with the Stormlight Archive’s world of Roshar, Mistborn’s Scadriel forms what could be considered the backbone of the entire universe-spanning story that Sanderson has been weaving together for the past two decades. The world of Scadrial is told over the course of multiple Eras, with only the first set of books, referred to as “Era 1” being the focus of the first film.

Mistborn (Era 1) follows Vin, a thief with the ability to use Allomancy, Scadrial’s special type of magic, which allows a person to burn specific metals for various effects. We don’t know just yet if Apple and Brandon will attempt to condense into a single film the entire Vin saga (I highly doubt it), but here is what you should check out beforehand. Considering Sanderson is only 2% done with the screenplay, you still have plenty of time.

The Books

Besides being perhaps the best jumping-in point for the whole Cosmere, Mistborn Era 1 consists of three main books, starting with Mistborn: The Final Empire. Set in the 1970s, the story follows Duane, who has just returned home from a tour in Vietnam, and is dealing with the aftermath while resettling back into his previous life, if that even exists anymore. And things only get worse when he crosses paths with a vampire.

Soon, Duane and his adopted niece find themselves driven by vengeance and revenge after the vampire kills Duane’s wife, with them hunting and being hunted by the seemingly immortal being.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson (Fantasy)

Combining epic fantasy and a brilliant murder mystery, all in a dark academia setting, it’s easy to see why readers weren’t able to get enough of The Raven Scholar last year. However, when one of the options is murdered, it falls to Neema to find out who is responsible and why. It’s a task that won’t really end all that well for her either way. On one hand, if she is successful, she could end up on the throne herself, whether she wants to or not. E-readers, like our top pick, the Kindle Paperwhite, are geared towards book formats, often featuring screens that attempt to mimic pages. These devices are more limited in what they can do – don’t expect to be scrolling socials or streaming shows when taking a break from reading. On the other hand, your more typical tablets, like the iPad Mini, can do a lot more, but the displays may strain your eyes and batteries deplete quicker. Notetaking functionality, like the Kobo Libra Colour offers, is also handy for students or people who like to write freely in book margins. Deciding which is best for your needs is a personal preference.

1. This e-reader keeps things simple, so don’t expect a colorful screen, stylus support, or access to emails, apps, and notifications. Instead, it eliminates outside distractions with a simple, easy-to-read display that prevents eye strain and helps conserve battery life. You'll very rarely need to charge it, even if you read all day long.

The latest edition of Kindle Paperwhite gets a slight bump in screen size, opting for a 7-inch e-ink display with a 300ppi resolution that should help reduce blue light and glare. It also comes with a new thin-film transistor to improve contrast. That, along with the 19 LEDs that wrap around the screen make for easy reading in just about any type of light, whether it's at the beach or in a dim tent on a camping trip. Adjusting the warm backlight in darker spaces is easy, but if you want automatic adjustments and a few other improvements, grab the Kindle Paperwhite Signature. You'll also want to pick up a decent case for it to take full advantage of the devices automatic sleep mode when covered.

Compared to its predecessor, the new Kindle Paperwhite has a 20% performance boost, making for speedy page turns and smooth scrolling through a library of books. Its 16GB of storage may seem light compared to other tablets, but that’s plenty of space for thousands of books. Audiobooks will eat up more room, but cloud storage is available in the unlikely event you’re running low on space and its also compatible with an Audible subscription. Other features include text and font adjustments to skip readers and an easy-to-access dictionary. If you're a Libby user, you won't be able to download the app directly to your Kindle, but you can send borrowed books to your Kindle from the Libby app installed elsewhere.

The Kindle Paperwhite features a plastic build to keep things thin compared to your typical hardcover book, so forget about arm and wrist fatigue. Although it might not seem like the most durable design, it's sturdy and waterproof. Even with the compact dimensions, this e-reader manages a wild 12-week battery life on just a 2.5-hour charge. It’s easy to see why this is our favorite Kindle model.

If you like the idea of a Kindle, but want something with a full-color display, you can check out the Kindle Colorsoft for a higher price. For bookworms, those dimensions are a little too big, and iPhone screens are just a little too small. Enter the iPad Mini. The 8.3-inch tablet is about the size of a paperback and weighs 10.4oz. It’s easy to cart around just about anywhere and can be comfortably held in one hand when lying down and relaxing. Best of all, it still can do everything the top iPad models can, including play iPad games.

Readers will gravitate towards the stunning Liquid Retina display with adjustable brightness and True Tone technology, ensuring a pleasant viewing experience from just about anywhere. Just be prepared for some glare. Pairing an Apple Pencil makes for easy annotations while you’re reading. However, that bright, colorful screen will deplete battery life far quicker than the e-ink display on the Kindle Paperwhite, lasting only 10 hours.

The latest generation of iPad Mini runs on an A17 Pro chip, the same one found in the iPhone 15 Pro. While that silicon is not as powerful as the M-series processors in the iPad Air and Pro models, it has plenty of oomph for the compact device and brings support for Apple Intelligence. Using all the top reading apps, like Apple Books, Amazon Kindle, comiXology, Libby, and Scribd will be breezy. Of course, it’s perfectly capable when you want to take a break from the pages, as scrolling socials, streaming, and performing everyday tasks will be just as zippy.

The 7th generation iPad Mini is currently the latest version of the smaller Apple tablet, however, there will likely be a new model releasing sometine in 2026. It’s a first for an iPad, and once you lay your eyes on it, it’ll be hard to go back to anything else. Vivid, accurate colors are complemented by excellent contrast, making just about any image pop. In IGN’s review of the iPad Pro, Jackie Thomas was particularly enamored with the display while devouring the Star Wars: The High Republic comics. Whether you're an avid reader of fiction, a student reviewing textbooks, or a professional keeping up with all the PDFs your boss keeps sending, selecting the right tablet can significantly impact your reading experience.

One of the main things you have to look into is the display's quality. The screen is where your eyes will spend most of their time, making display quality paramount. Eye comfort is also crucial, especially for extended reading sessions. Tablets with blue light reduction features or e-ink technology, which mimics the appearance of paper, can help reduce eye strain. E-Ink screens are easier on the eyes, but LCDs are more versatile if you want to use the same tablet for multiple purposes.

Long battery life is essential for uninterrupted reading, especially when on the move. Looking into tablets with a solid battery life will ensure that you can enjoy your books, magazines, or documents without constantly worrying about finding the next power outlet.

Lastly, size and weight affect how comfortably you can hold the tablet for long periods. While larger screens provide more immersive reading experiences, they should not compromise the device's portability. A lightweight, slim design makes it easier to carry your tablet in a bag or even hold it with one hand.

Best Tablets for Reading FAQ

What is the best tablet for reading according to Reddit?

If you're hoping to look to Reddit for advice on which tablet is best for reading, users on the r/androidtablets subreddit have point out a few clear winners. The top commenter points out that the Aldocube 50 Mini and Mini Pro are great options for reading due to being lightweight with good screens at a decent size for reading. Other commenters recommended Barnes & Noble's Nook because the e-paper technology offers more of a similar reading experience you'd get from an actual book.

Are tablets good for reading books?

Sure they are, but you’re going to find that regular LCD screens will tire your eyes much faster than an e-ink model. Battery life is also something you’ll want to keep in mind because most standard tablets don’t last as long as a Kindle, for instance, since their hardware is more demanding.

Do you need a Kindle subscription to read ona Kindle device?

You don't need a Kindle Unlimited subscription to read books on a Kindle. There are other ways to downlaod e-books on your Amazon device or you can simply purchase books directly from the Kindle storefront with no subscription required. The benefits of a subscription are more if you plan on reading a lot of books and don't want to purchase them all. This is especially true if you're a fan of LitRPG books, which tend to be included with a subscription.

What is the best tablet for reading outside?

If you're looking to read your tablet on the beach or sitting at the park, the Kindle Paperwhite is what you want. Unlike many tablets, this e-reader features an e-ink display, which acts and looks similar to printed paper. That means battling severe glare, brightness, eye strain, and battery life will be far less of an issue compared to LCD screens. The Kindle Paperwhite is also IPX8 water-resistant, unlike many tablets, so getting splashed poolside or caught in the rain won’t slow the device down.

Star Wars: Shadow of Maul Is a Crime Story That Sets Up the Animated Series

Find out how Marvel's Star Wars: Shadow of Maul sets up the new animated series and see an exclusive preview of this stunning new book.

2026 promises to be a great year for fans of Darth Maul. In March, Lucasfilm is debuting the newest animated Star Wars series, Maul: Shadow Lord. Set shortly after the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Shadow Lord reveals how Maul rebuilds his criminal organization and carves out a niche for himself in the era of the Empire.

But if you want the full story, you'll have to turn to Marvel Comics. Marvel will soon release a prequel story called Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, one that stars Maul and several other key characters from the animated series. This limited series is written by Benjamin Percy (Wolverine) and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov (Star Wars: Jedi Knights).

IGN had the chance to speak with Percy via email to learn more about how Star Wars: Shadow of Maul sets up the animated series. Check out an exclusive preview of the first issue in the slideshow gallery below, and then read on to learn more:

Neither creator is a stranger to the Star Wars franchise at this point. Musabekov is coming off a run on Marvel's Star Wars: Jedi Knights series, which was set before the events of Episode I. Percy, meanwhile, has written Darth Maul twice before, in Star Wars: Darth Maul - Black, White & Red and Star Wars: Boba Fett - Black, White & Red. As he reveals, those books were a helpful trial run before really diving into the fascinating protagonist that is Maul.

"I’m very glad I got the opportunity to write both Darth Maul: Black, White & Red and Boba Fett: Black, White & Red before taking on this project. Because they were fun as hell," Percy tells IGN. "But also because those one-shots were like flirtations with the Star Wars galaxy – a way of testing out writing for a galaxy far, far away and figuring out the standards of Lucasfilm. They are running a massive operation—a singular continuity that reaches across film, tv, novels, and comic books. They’re encyclopedias of lore. There’s a lot of zooms, calls, and emails between me, the Marvel editors, and the Lucasfilm folks, so it’s good to already have lines of communication open and a level of trust established."

Percy adds, "And the Maul one-shot was not just a way to test-drive the character; it was a way to push boundaries. I took a horror approach to that story, which isn’t your standard lens for Star Wars. This mini-series takes a tonal leap as well, since Shadow of Maul is very much a crime story, a police procedural."

As for Musabekov, Percy says, "I got really, really lucky, partnering with Madibek. He’s not just great with action and character—he has a true, deep love for and knowledge of Star Wars. And every detail he manifests on the page feels exactly right for that universe. I can’t wait for you to see what he’s been up to."

Shadow of Maul is designed to tie very directly into the animated series. Not only does it focus on Maul himself, this series also hinges on two characters who will shortly become his nemeses - police detective Brander Lawson and his droid partner Two-Boots.

"The prequel ties directly into the series," Percy says. "It’s meant to establish the characters, the world, and the trouble that detonates wonderfully in episode one. You can read the comic book on its own and get a thrill. You can also read the comic book alongside the series and understand how they’re speaking to each other."

Percy offers some added insight into Captain Lawson, revealing him to be an ex-bounty hunter who now struggles to maintain law and order on the chaotic world of Janix.

"I mentioned earlier that this is a police procedural, a gritty, grounded crime book," Percy says. "The stage is Janix, a shadow-soaked, neon-lit city controlled by crime syndicates. Lawson used to be a bounty hunter. Now he’s a cop and a single dad doing the best he can in a lawless territory. He a good man who pushes limits and breaks rules. And he’s joined by his partner, a droid named Two-Boots, who is loyal, warm, and a bit of a stickler."

Percy also teases that the Janix setting should immediately appeal to fans of projects like Star Wars: Andor, as this world carries a similarly dark and gritty vibe.

"Oh, man. I absolutely love the world of Janix," Percy says. "My two favorite Star Wars stories are Andor and Rogue One. And that’s because they’re grounded in realism. We’re taking a similar approach here. And this city is more than a stage—it’s a character in itself. Steam hisses from vents, billowing the air. Neon burnishes the night. Trash dirties the gutters. Lawson pops his collar and shoulders forward through the rain-drenched crowds. It’s all very noir."

What about Maul himself? What is the character's mental state following the end of the Clone Wars and his defeat on Mandalore? Does he smell opportunity in the air, or is he wary of the Empire and catching the attention of his former master? Percy can't reveal much, but he does tease that Maul has a very specific goal in travelling to Janix.

"Hmm. I’m not sure I’m allowed to say much about that. I’ll keep it vague and say he’s got an ax (or, er, a double-sided light saber) to grind—and some folks on Janix are in his crosshairs."

Star Wars: Shadow of Maul #1 will be released on March 4, 2026, a month before the animated series debuts on Disney+.
